After simply looking at the shapes of objects, I decided to start to look at rope again. I wanted to incorporate detail within the quickness of the four minute limit. I decided to use charcoal to create the first strand of rope. I considered drawing the individual strands that had fallen apart towards the end of the rope, however I decided to just focus on main formation of the rope and how it was purely bound together. I feel that the first drawing was successful. The charcoal allowed me to create tone and shadowing throughout the piece. I feel that this is important to show, you can't look at an object and not see the light reflecting off it, well unless you're in a completely black room. The charcoal gave me the power to make a contrast from dark to light but also allowed me create tone between them. I guess I could call it the "middle" tone, this allowed an illusion of light to be shown on the rope. Overall, I am pleased with how this piece turned out. The next piece I decided to use fine liner. I wanted to use three contrasting mediums to show the how the rope is portrayed differently with each. I think that the fine line drawing turned out well. I had manage to stick to my time limit of four minutes per drawing therefore the tone was mainly the same. I now know that creating tone with a fine liner is very difficult for me, I tend to press down hard on a page, therefore using fine liner was no difference, all the lines were the same solid black colour. I feel that this took something away from the drawing. It stopped me from creating the tone that I had succeed with using charcoal. Overall, I am happy with how this piece turned out, I had observed the movement in the rope and captured it within my drawing. I dislike the final drawing. I used a pencil to create it, this did not benefit me. I found that using a pencil or pencils doesn't create a real contrast throughout a drawing, no matter how hard I try. Also, I focused on the shape of the rope during this drawing which did not leave me a lot of time to add the tonal contrast that I could clearly see. To conclude, I don't like to the final drawing, it is very contrived and does not reveal how I see rope.
